Experts have made a portrait of a shoplifter in quarantine

The socio-demographic composition of thieves in food retail chains has changed with the introduction of a general isolation regime in Russia in March 2020. This conclusion was reported to RBC by employees of the company, which develops solutions for protecting against shoplifting using face recognition technology.

In particular, there has been a sharp increase in the number of attempted theft by people over the age of 30. Among them, many people of a respectable appearance at the age of 35-50 years old appeared, Alexey Sudakov, a representative of BIT, told RBC. Mostly sober people try to commit theft - before that, cases of theft in most cases were committed by intruders in a state of intoxication.

If before quarantine more than 60% of theft attempts were made by people under 30 years old, then in March-April 2020 this category decreased to 33%. More than 61% of attempted thefts during this period were over 30 years of age. Most often men try to steal something (about 62%). Basically, alcohol and beer are the objects of quarantine thefts. The most popular among them are non-elite types of beer, vodka and cognac, specify in BIT. Also, over the past couple of months, shoplifters have been attracted to bakery, confectionery and meat products.

More than 55% of shoplifters tried to steal goods in medical masks, but this does not help them - the algorithm recognizes them, and when they re-visit the store security receives an alert, the company notes.

The study, which was prepared using the ability algorithm to determine a person's belonging to a specific age group by the face of a person, affected 40,000 attempted thefts in March and April in 300 stores in large cities of Russia.
