The social situation has changed. What does a shoplifter look like now?

The portrait of a shoplifter has changed over the past two months. Among those who steal products in supermarkets, there are more people of age, decent appearance and wearing medical masks. They are engaged in face recognition systems, including those installed in retail outlets.

According to experts, in the past it was mostly drunken young people who stole from shops. But now more and more malefactors at the age of 35-50 years began to come across. They are sober, look decent, wear masks and try to steal not only alcohol, but also bread and sausage.

“We have been implementing facial recognition in the cameras of stores from large retail chains for more than two years. They are mainly used to prevent petty theft. The Stop Shoplifter solution helps retail organizations significantly reduce lost profits - according to analysts, losses from shoplifters' actions can amount to 2-3% of the store's turnover,” BIT noted.

Alexey Sudakov, a representative of the BIT company, comments on the situation with theft in stores.

- We attribute these changes to the fact that the social situation in which people have fallen has changed, because now a significant number of people are without money. Even before, our people did not live very richly, but now the economic situation has worsened completely, which forced them to take such measures - to go to the store and engage in theft. This, again, I emphasize, this is my personal subjective opinion. We did not conduct any large opinion polls, this is just what we ourselves see and our assumptions.

— How does the system itself work, how is this data analyzed?

- When a person enters the frame, and this is now done by most recognition systems, it immediately determines his gender and age. And as for whether he is a shoplifter or not, then this is a comparison of feature vectors with those feature vectors that were previously entered into the database.

The study was conducted on the basis of data from 300 stores in major Russian cities. At the same time, experts note that medical masks will not help shoplifters. The system can recognize them in these protective equipment and transfer the data to the supermarket.
