Buyers will be scanned for age

The manager of the shops «Pyaterochka» and «Perekrestok» X5 Group asked Ministry of Digital Development about the possibility of using biometric personal data to confirm the age of buyers of alcohol and tobacco through SCO, which will allow to unload employees. By law, retailers have this possibility, but surveys show a skeptical attitude of many consumers to biometrics for shopping.

The Director for Interaction with State Authorities of X5 Group (the network «Perekrestok», «Pyaterochka», «Chizhik») Stanislav Bogdanov in June appealed to the Ministry of Digital Development with a request to clarify the interpretation of the legislation on personal data, told the close to the Ministry interlocutor. According to the source, Mr Bogdanov asked whether data from the Unified Biometric System (UBS) could be used to verify tobacco and alcohol buyers, which would make it possible not to demand a passport for CSR.

Stanislav Bogdanov confirmed to Kommersant that X5 sent a request to the Ministry of Digital Development to clarify the use of biometric personal data to authorize the sale of alcohol and tobacco for SCO.

In the first quarter of 2023, the reporting says, X5’s personnel costs increased by 22.2% year-on-year, to RUB 61.19 billion.

The Law “On a Unified Biometric System” came into force on June 1, 2023. As follows from the document, all organizations that collect biometrics into commercial biometric systems must transfer this data to the UBS, the operator of which is Center of Biometric Technologies. According to SPARK-Interfax, the company is owned by Rostelecom through its subsidiaries.

The Ministry of Digital Development told Kommersant that it requested additional information from X5 about the projected process in order to evaluate it and make a conclusion.

The CEO of BIT, the developer of the Stop Shoplifter system, Mikhail Korablev, says that in order to implement the technology of using biometrics in CSR there are components that will require a software update in terms of the use of certified EBS facial recognition and integration with transactions. Magnit noted that any digital identification will increase the speed and efficiency of verification. Retailers Lenta, Auchan, Metro, O'Key did not respond to Kommersant.
