Masked, sober, middle-aged. How did the picture of a shoplifter change during the pandemic?

BIT says that modern face recognition systems are able to determine the gender and age of a person caught in the lens of a surveillance camera, even if the face is hidden behind a mask.

The same company added that the portrait of a shoplifter has changed markedly over the past two months. Seemingly decent adults are now committing crimes of this kind. Crisis... However, neither BIT, nor retailers give specific figures.

According to a study by BIT, shoplifters used to be mostly drunk young people. Now, sober citizens aged 35-50, decent-looking in medical masks, have also begun to do this. They hunt mainly for alcohol, as before, but now they also do not disdain bread and sausage.

The fact that with the advent of the pandemic in Russia, shoplifting became more frequent, the regional press reported about a month ago. People in masks no longer arouse suspicion. Experienced attackers and those who joined their ranks took advantage of this.

However, according to experts, the mask will not prevent the algorithm from recognizing a person. More precisely, at least his gender and age. Even if you add glasses, a beard, a hat, a cap or a hood to the mask, says BIT representative Alexei Sudakov.

Alexey Sudakov (representative of BIT)
“If the whole face is visible there - 100%, if at least 25% is visible, then from this fragment it will already be possible to see whether there is a man or a woman, and age.”

The question arises: is this data enough to find a criminal, and will anyone try so hard to find a shoplifter? Another thing is if the store has a database that contains data on those who have already been caught stealing, with photographs. Or a base of employees, if one of them decides to commit a crime, wearing make-up. Or a base of once VIP clients, whose status has now been drastically lowered by life.

BIT declined to answer a question from Business FM about which supermarket chains it partnered with for its research. And even more about the situation itself is the fact that not a single retailer began to answer the question of whether the network fixes an increase in shoplifting over the past month and a half. Business FM sent such a request to the largest market players twice in the last month. But no one wanted to talk about it openly. And retailers can be understood.
